About Kelly Kamowski

CitizenPowered.org member since Thu 01-31-2008

I'm a single mother of two teenagers, Madeline and Max. I've been divorced for two years as of December 2007. We have a menagerie of pets living with us --- two kittens, a cat, a dog, a hamster, and a fish. I am a CPA and work for a nonprofit organization in Bensenville that offers several programs including foster care, headstart, international adoption, home care for people suffering from Alzheimers, and subsidized housing for the elderly. Knowing that I'm helping the world in my small way is the satisfying part of my job. My true fulfillment in life comes from being a cartoon gagwriter (ghostwriter for cartoonists). I've been published in most major publications. I have written a book of poignant cartoons about divorce in collaboration with Stephanie Piro, a syndicated cartoonist, who lives in New Hampshire. She is one of the Six Chix syndicated in 125 publications. The website to view a sampling of these cartoons and my bio is at located here. Leah Dickey, the amazingly talented graphic designer who created the citizen powered website created my website for me. Thanks, Leah!

School(s) Attended

College: Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa. I know, you've never heard of it. Passed the CPA Exam in 1986 when I was 26, a minor miracle.

Place(s) Worked

I have worked at three nonprofits:

  • Shelter, Inc.
  • Rainbows
  • Lifelink

I have also worked in the banking, hotel, catering, and commercial real estate brokerage industries. I put myself through college working at a multitude of places. My favorite jobs have always been ones involving meeting all types of people.

Personal Statement

My biggest joy in life and biggest struggle in life is being a mother. I deal with the financial and emotional reverberations of my divorce on a daily basis. Like all parents, I try to live my life in an honest manner yet know that my kids figured out a long time ago how imperfect I am. My goals for them are to be hard workers, be openminded, and to love music and learning. In the past, I've done volunteer work on a domestic violence hotline, at my kids' schools, and at my church as a Sunday school teacher and finance committee member. I don't have as much time to do that anymore, and I miss that.
