About Jennifer Bishop-Jenkins

CitizenPowered.org member since Mon 05-05-2008

I am the national Program Director for Victims and Survivors for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence www.bradycampaign.org/victims and I am the sister of Nancy Bishop Langert who along with her husband and unborn child were shot and killed in 1990 in the northern suburbs of Chicago. The killer's motive? To see what it would feel like to shoot someone. He was 16 years old. Since that day I have been working to prevent killing and violence and help victims of crime. I also am the founder of the statewide victims group www.IllinoisVictims.org

Personal Statement

WIth 30,000 a year dying in the United States from Gun Violence, and 100,000 being injured, with the staggering associated costs not only to the public in terms of financial damages approaching $100 Billion a year, but to the lives and emotions of so many thousands of traumatized people and destroyed lives, we must stand together to end this nightmare. We make it far too easy in our nation for dangerous people to get dangerous weapons. There are almost no national laws (only 3 really) to address gun violence, and yet we KNOW Common Sense Laws DO make a difference. We can prevent this. This is not an unsolvable problem. We have never as a nation failed to stand up to a challenge like this. Anyone who tells you there is nothing we can do has a hidden agenda or is simply monumentally misinformed. Universal background checks on every single gun transfer, regulation of gun trafficking, and banning of military level firepower to the civilian market will save lives by the tens of thousands and costs to the public of millions. Join us! Victims of crime in the meantime must be protected. At IllinoisVictims.org you will find ways to help support the voices of victims in their struggles for life in the wake of violent crime. Purpose over Pain represents the finest example of this work we all do in the wake of tragedy to make sure we do all we can that no one else has to suffer such horrific evil.
