About Harry Rhodes

CitizenPowered.org member since Mon 12-17-2007

I grew up in the Chicago area, and have always loved living here (and cheering for the Cubs). As a teenager I was an intern for Congressman Abner Mikva, and was very influenced by his progressive views. After High School I moved to Israel and lived there, on and off, for the next twenty or so years. During that time I got my Masters degree, got married and had three children. While in Israel I focused my energies on promoting coexistence among Jewish and Palestinian (Arab) Israeli citizens. We initiated many programs for children and youth, and many leadership programs. We succeeded in changing the way that many people viewed "the other." I moved back to Chicago with my family in 2001. It was then that I met Les Brown and heard about Growing Home. I have been working with Growing Home ever since, and have become very involved in promoting urban agriculture and food security throughout Chicago.

I'm especially interested in urban organic agriculture and how it relates to community and economic development
Our society needs to change its priorities by accepting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This guarantees certain basic rights to all people, including: food and nutrition, health care, housing, the right to make a living, education, and many more. The United States has a long way to go until it reaches these goals. I believe in working to achieve those changes.
We need to establish a Department of Peace, and devote energy into working for peace instead of using war as a means to achieve our goals. If we would take the many billions of dollars that are used to support the military/industrial complex, and turn it towards solving social justice issues we could solve many of the ills of our society and have a positive effect on the rest of the world as well.
