About Bessie Hitchcock

CitizenPowered.org member since Tue 05-13-2008

I am president of a NFP organization, Each One Reach One Child, Inc. (501(c) 3. I was blessed with two beautiful daughters. I am a mother that knows the pain of having to bury your child because of a senseless killing. My daughter was murdered in 1995 at the age of 19, a sophomore in college, in my home by an ex-boyfriend. I found my daughter's body when I arrived home from work. Yes, I know the pain. I am from Selma, Alabama, where I had the opportunity to march with Dr. King, fighting for peace and rights for all people. I am an ordained minister, having worked with children over 25 years. I have a passion for saving our children.

Hazel Harrell High, Selma, Alabama; Selma University, Selma, Alabama; Alabama University, Montgomery, Ala - Bachelors in Business Adm.; Roosevelt University, Chicago - Women's Business Entrepreneur; Cross College, Munster, IN, Ministerial Leadership

Personal Statement

I am interested in joining this group because I am an individual that works hard in helping our youth to understand there is hope, and they can turn negative anger into something positive. Out of my tragedy, God allowed me to write and create a curriculum, Color Me Peace, where we partner with schools and families to prevent violence. It is designed to aid in the character development of children, specifically the management of hostility. Some issues addressed: Child on Child Violence, Alcohol and Drug Abuse, School Dropout, Low Academic Achievement, Low Self-Esteem, etc. The central theme of the curriculum is Peace. We target Pre-K through 8th grade. Our organization joins with you to help stop the shedding of the innocent blood of our children. There is a cry in my heart to stop the killing, too much. We do need to take a stand, and we stand with you. It still "takes a village."
