One of the keys to successful networking is building sustainable long-term relationships. Without this mindset, your networking activities will be very short-term. Therefore, you will have to re-build and find some new relationships each time you have a need. Keep in mind that networking is a two-way street. It should never only be about how people can help you. This is why is it very important to build and grow your relationships.
With sustainable relationships comes more sustainability in your life. It is a good feeling to know that you have solid relationships that you can leverage whenever appropriate. Life takes us in many directions so it is important that we can take control of whatever we can. You are the keeper of your contacts so you can dictate how much time and effort you spend on developing relationships.
Keep in mind the following techniques when trying to build sustainable relationships for both business and life:
1. Take the time to get to know people both personally and professionally
2. Invite people to get together on a regular basis around meals such as breakfast, lunch, dinner, or happy hour
3. Stay in front of your network as much as possible by sending regular emails with valuable information and updates on your business and personal life
4. Host your own event or party so that you can reach out to your network and invite people
5. Connect people together in your network, which shows that are looking out for people
6. Become a subject matter expert on a topic that you can talk about, write about, and learn about, which will make you memorable to people
7. Volunteer your time with a non-profit, which will help you to build solid relationships with the other volunteers
With solid and sustainable relationship comes the peace of mind that you can accomplish anything that you set your mind to. With a solid base of contacts, you can leverage people’s expertise, contacts, and ideas to take yourself to the next level. Just remember that you need to reciprocate as well.

Why are we doing this?
One of the main objectives of CitizenPowered.org is to build the social capital (defined as the number, quality and utility of social networks)—of communities. Social capital is the building block of communities. It is the relationships within communities and across communities that help everything from neighborhood watches to job training programs to wetlands preservation happen. Every community has social capital, and nearly every community has gaps that social capital can help fill.
